The average orgasm is in essence, a reaction that takes place in the brain as well as the genitals, but a recently discovered phenomenon called ASMR is now being referred to as “an orgasm of the brain.” because of its takes place in the brain as well as the head and neck area. ASMR is a fairly new phenomenon and much of it still remains a mystery, but here’s everything we know.

ASMR ASMR stands for Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response. Autonomous refers to the something that’s independent or self governed. Sensory because the feeling occurs as the result of specific engagement of certain senses. Meridian is a reference to the euphoric type of “high” that occurs as a result of ASMR.

Neologism As it stands, ASMR is officially considered a neologism, or a name for a new or isolated term that is still in the process of entering common use but has not been entirely accepted into the mainstream language. Studies on ASMR are just beginning to take place and the information is still sparse.

The Sensation ASMR put simply, is a pleasant tingling sensation that usually occurs in the head, back or peripheral regions of the body. For some, sleep is the end result of ASMR.
General Cause ASMR is most commonly a response to visual, tactile, olfactory or cognitive stimuli. It sometimes occurs as an engagement of some of these senses and not others. At times even just a single sense engaged correctly can trigger ASMR.

Not Official ASMR is currently somewhat controversial because he evidence thus far is anecdotal yet there’s been an influx of interest on the subject. Currently, there are no completed studies on the subject. However, it’s the subject of much discourse and discussion on the internet. The papers and articles written thus far are speculative because of the anecdotal nature of the information that exists.

Origin ASMR entered the consciousness around 2008. A Yahoo group called Society of Sensationalists formed discussing ASMR, as did an open discussion blog entitled Unnamed Feeling. Soon a subreddit dedicated to ASMR was created and quickly grew.
Coalesced Part of the reason it’s became a phenomenon was the timing. All these people began experiencing this foreign feeling at once and communities sprouted up to try and identify it. ASMR came together like a perfect storm of internet anecdotes.

A Label Early attempts at identification resulted in a number of placeholder names to describe the “unnamed feeling.” Examples include “brain massage”, “head tingle”, ‘brain tingle”, and “brain orgasm”.

Official Naming Jennifer Allen coined the term “ASMR” and explained the use of the word autonomous saying it describes “the capacity in many to facilitate or completely create the sensation at will.” This is a bit of misnomer, because that’s not the case for many who experience ASMR. More often it must be triggered.
ASMR U Allen created a website called ASMR University which serves to collect information on the issues and help educate the public. On the site she traces back the exact birthdate of the ASMR to the creation of topic entitled “Weird Sensation Feels Good” good on SteadyHeathl.com- a website that uses groupthink to try and identify undiagnosed conditions. The topic received 300 replies.

The Tag For most, ASMR must be triggered. This has birthed a morass of videos online dedicated to helping incite the feeling. Videos entitled ASMR have flooded YouTube.

Tactile ASMR triggers usually fall into three different categories with whispering being the most common. Tactile triggers are also common. ASMR trigger videos feature people crinkling paper, tapping a pencil or blowing into a microphone.
Requests Another channel with the name ASMR requests has 350,000 subscribers. It features a young woman taking requests from her viewers, Videos include her brushing her hand wish a makeup brush or tapping holiday ornaments.

Role Play Role Play is the third most common ASMR trigger. They’re usually conducted by women who act as a guide for different types of situations. Science Fiction role play for instance includes space travel descriptions. Visits to the doctor are described. They all come complete with guided visualization, walking the listener through every step of the role play.

ASMR Convention IN 2012 the first national ASMR convention was held in the UK. It featured speakers, open discussion and lots of ASMR related videos. The convention was heavily covered by media outlets like Slate and The Huffington Post.
Non Sexual ASMR is often mistaken for a sexual practice of some sort, perhaps due to the use of words like orgasm and role play. Without prior knowledge, some ASMR trigger videos could seem like sexual role play but there’s no link between sex and ASMR. Genital stimulation has yet to be associated with the practice.

Science The scientific community has just begun tackling ASMR. A psychiatrist from the Yale School of Medicine has linked ASMR to a “pleasurable seizure.” While other psychiatrists have labeled it more of a deep form of meditation.

The Videos You might see a video of a young woman reading or talking off the cuff very close to her computer screen in a light whisper tagged “ASMR". Such is the case with the YouTube account Gentlewhispering. One video with 657,513 views shows her speaking almost flirtatiously to the camera in a light whisper. For people with ASMR, her voice triggers a drug-like reaction.
